Edition 2025
Serial Madness
Belgian Cinema Today
In This is not a murder mystery, a Belgian art icon becomes the protagonist of a mysterious, visually stunning and compelling six-part whodunnit. Surrealist painter René Magritte attempts to clear his name after a brutal murder on a lavish English estate in this highly-anticipated new TV series.
When René Magritte receives an invitation to visit the estate of the flamboyant Lord James in England, the summer of 1936 is in full swing. The rising artist is asked to contribute to an exclusive exhibition alongside luminaries such as Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, and Lee Miller. But what should have been a dream for the Belgian surrealist turns into a nightmare when, after a wild night, he wakes up next to the lifeless body of a young artist—posed like one of his own paintings. As Scotland Yard launches an investigation and the guests are forbidden to leave the estate, Magritte must do everything in his power to prove his innocence. Directed by Hans Herbots and written by Christophe Dirickx and Paul Baeten, the series is based on an original idea by Matthias Lebeer (also co-director of episodes 3 and 4) and Christophe Dirickx. It marks the first VRT series produced under a pan-European collaboration between eight public broadcasters. At Film Fest Gent, you can catch the world premiere of the first two episodes of this brand-new piece of cultural heritage.
