Edition 2000
Pat York began her professional career as a journalist in the fashion section of ‘American Vogue Magazine’. A few months later, she switched to ‘Glamour Magazine’ where, together with photographer David Bailey, she was sent to Japan for a report on fashion and travelling. She bought her first camera and lenses from a Nikon factory. During her next assignments in Africa and Europe, she learnt the basics of photography with the help of Bailey.
Back in New York everyone was so impressed with her photos that she was immediately taken on by the magazine’s photo editors. One of her first assignments was photographing Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy. During another assignment, she came into contact with Michael York, who would later become her husband. The subjects of her photographic assignments soon consisted of travelling, architecture, politics, fashion and famous people. Thus a talented photographer was born. Her work is often described as brutal, unique, fresh, unusual, funny and sometimes aggressive.
The exhibition ‘Masked, Uncovered, Unmasked’ which will be held in the Kunsthal De Sint-Pietersabdij from 1 to 22 October is free of charge and open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. It has already been shown in such cities as Moscow, Prague, New York and Los Angeles.
