Elle! Louise Brooks

Edition 2002 WSA Film Music Days
WSA Film & Music

G.W. Pabst's silent film classic Tagesbuch einer Verloren (1929), starring the legendary Louise 'Lulu' Brooks, is accompanied by the highly original live music of Roberto Tricarri. The German actress and Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla (Die Ehe der Maria Braun, Lili Marleen) provides commentary and singing on the spot.

Elle! is a tribute to the mystery Louise 'Lulu' Brooks. Some luminous and decisive meetings are at the origin of this creation: the one between composer Roberto Tricarri, who has a passion for the silent film, and actress Hanna Schygulla, preceded by the one - through the screen - between Hannah and the woman who was to become her muse: Louise Brooks.

Tagebuch einer Verlorenen (1929) by G.W. Pabst is an ode to sexual freedom, resisting the hypocrisy of a degenerated society. This film breaks with the laws of common decency and splendidly exalts disobedience and beauty. The silent film here supports a contemporary creation in which the close coherence of music and image are beautifully revealed. The deep sensual voice of Hanna Schygulla gives a new dimension to the masterpiece of the German director.

The festival will present Hanna Schygulla with the Special Honorary Joseph Plateau Award.
