Talk 'The Road to Roeg'

Sprekers The Road to Roeg
In depth 25 Jun 2025
Not quite familiar yet with Nicolas Roeg's work and want to get ready for our programme Fractured Visions: A Nicolas Roeg Retrospective? Then join us in Ghent or Brussels for the talk The Road to Roeg. The talk is exclusively in Dutch.

Every adventure, every road has a beginning. Take your first steps on the Roeg Road during our revelatory and introductory talk The Road to Roeg. Lecturer Anke Brouwers, director and screenwriter Bert Scholiers and Classics curator Patrick Duynslaeger pave their way through the labyrinthine life and work of Nicolas Roeg, a visionary who jettisoned classical narrative structures and turned cinema into a sensory experience full of fragmentation, time jumps and visual bravado. Together, the trio explores what makes Roeg such an unforgettable and fascinating director. Why does he belong to the pantheon of Britain's greatest directors? How did he evolve from a quirky cameraman into the legendary mad poet behind films such as Don't Look Now, The Man Who Fell to Earth and Walkabout? And what is his legacy for the current generation of young filmmakers? All interesting stops on The Road to Roeg.

Anke Brouwers is a film history lecturer at HoGent/KASK School of Arts and also works as a freelance editor and film journalist. In 2021, she published her book Mooi zijn en zwijgen. De machtige vrouwen van de Amerikaanse stille film ("Be pretty and stay silent. The powerful women of the American silent film").

Bert Scholiers
is a screenwriter and director. He co-wrote films such as Smoorverliefd and Sprakeloos and made his directorial debut with the film Charlie en Hannah gaan uit, the closing film of FFG2017. Together with Jonas Govaerts, he created the series F*** You Very, Very Much.

Patrick Duynslaegher was a film critic for Knack for nearly forty years. From 2011 tot 2018, he was the creative director of Film Fest Gent, where he is currently still active as the curator of the Classics programme and as the host of the FFG Talkies.
