Meet the Belgian Short Filmmakers

Belgian Student Shorts13
Interview 02 Oct 2025
Together with Kortfilm.be we spoke with four filmmakers selected for the Competition for Belgian Student Shorts 2025 at Film Fest Ghent. In short video interviews, they talk about their films, their sources of inspiration, and the artistic choices that shape their work.

The Competition for Belgian Student Shorts is the place at Film Fest Ghent where emerging talent takes the stage for the first time before a wide audience. Ten selected films compete for the award for Best Belgian Student Short. For many filmmakers, it is an important step in their career, often marking the beginning of a festival journey.

For this occasion, Kortfilm.be interviewed four of the selected directors: Niko Wei (Maman), Maura De Troyer (Marieke Twijfelt), Azra Sterckx (Solstice) and Mon Dewulf (Far From Beyrouth). In these conversations, they offer insight into their creative process and share how their personal experiences and artistic choices shaped their films. In doing so, you get to know not only their work but also the makers behind the camera.

The Belgian shorts will be screened on Sunday 12 October at 14:30 in Kinepolis 3. The award for Best Belgian Student Short will be presented the same evening at 19:00 in the Film Fest Café. For those who want to (re)discover the films, there will be another screening on Wednesday 15 October at 16:15 in Sphinx 1.
