From 11 to 13 October, deAuteurs and Film Fest Gent joined forces for an intensive three-day workshop on creative script development. Under the guidance of experienced script consultants Franz Rodenkirchen and Françoise von Roy (Solace23), eight selected writer-directors worked on four new projects: Julie Mahieu & Aline Boyen, Meltse Van Coillie, Isabelle Tollenaere, Karen Vázquez Guadarrama & Habacuc Antonio De Rosario, and Aaron Denolf & Alexander Wolfgang Smet.

The workshop offered participants a unique opportunity to explore their scripts in an open and stimulating environment. In group sessions, the scripts and treatments were discussed in depth, with a focus on constructive peer-to-peer feedback and creative reflection. Rodenkirchen and von Roy guided the process with attention to both the individual voice of each maker and the collective learning experience.

They also addressed broader themes such as genre, character development, and visual storytelling beyond conventional tropes. The duo gave a talk on these topics during the Film Professionals Day, titled The Process of Script Development and the Challenges to Individual Creative Expression, in which they delved deeper into the tension between creative freedom and guided development.

The strong response to the workshop — with no fewer than 70 applicants — and the great interest in the lecture confirm a real need within the Belgian film community for in-depth trajectories dedicated to script development.

The workshop came at exactly the right time for us. Julie Mahieu and I are still in an early writing phase, with lots of loose ideas. Through the process of the workshop, we got much closer to the core of our story in just three days. We gained insights that would probably have taken us months otherwise. It was a very inspiring and enjoyable experience to be able to delve into our script with such intense focus over three days, in a safe and open environment, together with others.” - Aline Boyen
