How do you move forward after an immeasurable loss? That question defines Mouse, the third collaboration between Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson. Following Saint Frances and Ghostlight, the directing duo once again succeeds in reconciling grief, loss, and the search for identity. This coming-of-age drama, which premiered at the Berlinale earlier this year, is a heartwarming gem.

Edinburgh, 1810. A scandal erupts at a girls' school when two teachers are accused of having a love affair. Based on a true story, this elegant queer period drama thrives on the simmering tensions between the characters, portraying both the struggle to love unconditionally and the irreparable wreckage left in the aftermath.

With Paper Tiger, a crime thriller with the aura of a Greek tragedy, American filmmaker James Gray once again crafts cinema that is at once mythical, personal, and intimate. Adam Driver and Miles Teller play two vastly different brothers who cross paths with the Russian mafia in 1980s New York.

In her second film, Costa Rican filmmaker Valentina Maurel paints a powerful portrait of an eccentric family and their tangle of uncertain desires, ambiguous intentions, and an overarching need for change. For Maurel, reaching adulthood does not mark the end of a process of growth, but rather its continuation: a phase that is messy and as painful as it is fascinating.
