Seeing what your parents are up to at all times: a gift or a curse? According to Frédéric Hambalek’s Was Marielle weiss the answer is most definitely the latter. In this viciously funny yet thought-provoking family drama with a supernatural twist, the illusion of a perfect family life is shattered when teenage daughter Marielle suddenly gains telepathic powers.
A baby monitor with a built-in camera became the unlikely spark for Was Marielle weiss. German director Frédéric Hambalek began reflecting on the presence – and absence – of privacy in our modern world, and the ripple effect it has on our relationships. What happens when it’s not parents watching over their children, but the other way around? When the all-seeing eye is not God, but your reclusive teenage daughter? This is the premise of Hambalek’s supernatural-tinged tragicomedy, in which Marielle, after a nasty blow to the head, suddenly develops telepathic powers. Overnight, the eleven-year-old begins to glimpse exactly what her father Tobias and mother Julia are up to – a sobering revelation that turns the family hierarchy upside down. Marielle’s visions give rise to embarrassing, hilarious, and deeply dysfunctional scenarios, while also tearing down the carefully maintained façades her parents have built. A thought-provoking conversation starter for all ages, this oddball mix of Liar Liar, Black Mirror, and Nineteen Eighty-Four guarantees both laughter and unease.
