Mira travels across Canada helping people end their lives. It's a solitary existence that, we gradually discover, weighs on her more than it first appears. Until she meets a mysterious man, Flanagan (Xavier Bergeron, who received a special mention at the Locarno Film Festival for his performance). He draws her out of her emotional isolation. However, his presence starts to become unsettling as he keeps turning up near her patients. Canadian director Denis Côté (Paul, FFG25) stays well off the beaten track. Violence du corps de l'autre is the portrait of a remarkable woman, raises questions about assisted suicide, and evolves into a sibylline thriller. Shot on grainy 16mm, this fiction film relies more on atmosphere and emotion than on a clearly defined story. That's no bad thing, as Côté conjures images that linger long in the mind.
