The film's narrative unfolds through the flashback recollections of Roberto, a novelist manqué weary of the emotional deadness and numbing routine of his life as a Buenos Aires insurance agent. As he rides the metro back and forth from his unhappy home to hls dead-end job, the middle-aged intellectual is lost in an interior world of pessimistic ruminations. His fellow passengers appear to him as plastic-wrapped zombies, and Subiela's deft set-up of such images begins the film on a promisingly surrealistic note. (Variety, 6.9.89)
