Tom, a 12 year old boy, is furious that he is being sent away for the summer to stay with his Aunt and Uncle in their boring apartment because his brother, Peter, has measles. There is nothing to do there and no one to play with. Tom counts the days until he can return home to Peter. One night, unable to sleep, Tom hears the landlady's antique grandfather clock strike thirteen times. Tom is lead to the great hall, where the grandfather clock sits, to discover the beginning of a wonderful and magical secret that's almost too amazing to be true. But it is true and in the new world that Tom discovers is a special friend named Hatty, who leads him into a summer full of adventures.
