Chabela and her husband Eufemio are happy people until the day their son Nicolas falls ill: they do not have the means to pay for his medicine. Chabela asks a certain Tomas for help, but he wants her to share his bed, which she refuses. Eufemio does not find help either and he steals a pearl from a statue in church, which he loses. People suspect him of the theft and he is thrown into gaol. They force Tomas to give money for the treatment. Eufemio is released from prison for Jack of evidence; he finds the pearl which he replaces in the statue. The local priest thinks a miracle has happened.
