A young boy uncovers a witches' plot to turn all the children of England into mice. The Witches is the wonderfully original and inspired result of three wildly imaginative artists joining forces: master storyteller Roald Dahl, Muppet legend Jim Henson (who designed the prosthetics and animatronics), and director Nicolas Roeg. Anjelica Huston adds a dose of camp to this dark fairy tale as the Grand High Witch.
The Witches is the wonderfully original and inspired result of three wildly imaginative artists joining forces. Master storyteller Roald Dahl provided the source material. Muppet legend Jim Henson produced the film, with his Creature Shop crafting the witches' prosthetics and the animatronic mice and rats. And director Nicolas Roeg delivered a richly cinematic adaptation of the book, in which a young boy uncovers a witches' plot to turn all children of England into mice. Dressed entirely in black, Anjelica Huston brings a hefty dose of camp to her role as the Grand High Witch, gleefully terrorising her minions in this creepy fantasy. The Witches is a dark fairy tale about the diabolical evil lurking beneath the surface of everyday behaviour, always poised to strike when least expected. The tone of the film is macabre, yet also playful and exuberant.
