A young father returns to his childhood home to sell his parents’ apartment, but is confronted with an unspoken sense of homelessness. The Visitor quietly invites the viewer along his search for reconnection. The first feature by Vytautas Katkus, crowned Best Director at Karlovy Vary, fully delivers on the promise of Lithuanian slow cinema and his award-winning shorts.
Amid the bustle of his young family life in Norway, expat Danielius returns (or escapes?) to his native Lithuania to sell his parents' apartment. A guest in his own childhood home, he tentatively searches for reconnection. With The Visitor, his feature debut, director Vytautas Katkus gently extends the quiet power of his acclaimed short films, including Community Gardens (Best International Short, FFG2019) and Cherries (Special Mention, FFG2022). Co-written with Slow director Marija Kavtaradzė (Explore Award winner, FFG2023), and shot on 16mm by Katkus himself, the film oscillates between distance and intimacy, cool observation and tender warmth. Sparse in words but rich in detail, The Visitor is a delicate study of fatherhood and belated farewells—an understated homecoming that slowly but deeply takes hold.
