In 1994 I went to Stockholm on a business trip. I met and chatted with a stranger who suddenly asked me if I remembered the death of Kyllikki Saari. Of course I knew the basic circumstances of this most famous Finnish murder mystery. I was born in the same year as the murder took place, and thus through my entire youth I have followed the mystery as numerous explanations have been endlessly discussed in the papers. This chance acquaintance revealed he lived in Kyllikki’s village at the time of the murder. He also claimed to know the murderer’s identity and said most of the villagers knew as well. He told me this story in the hope I would make a movie. Fat chance, I thought… (Kari Väänänen)
