Through sharp, incisive interviews recorded (and rediscovered decades later) at the First International Women's Film Seminar (Berlin, 1973), Norwegian filmmaker Vibeke Løkkeberg captures with striking precision how women film professionals are obstructed from dedicating themselves to cinema on their own terms. A film that should be outdated but sadly is not.
This documentary, recorded by Vibeke Løkkeberg and her crew during "The First International Women's Film Seminar" in 1973 (considered the first-ever feminist film festival) came to life against all odds. The footage was lost after funding for the project fell through, and even when it was rediscovered in 2019, completing the film proved a daunting challenge. Its release now feels nothing short of a miracle. Both the film itself and the story of making it stand as a powerful, still-relevant testament to what it means to navigate the male-dominated film industry as a woman. Løkkeberg delivers a pointed critique of inequality in the world of cinema and a moving tribute to the resilience and spirit of a remarkable group of women. More than fifty years later, the road to the director's chair remains far from smooth.
