Rural England, 1949. The Coal family reside in a once magnificent hall surrounded by the rotting accoutrements of their lives. Sir Hugo Coal is an eccentric aristocrat with an obsessional ambition to stun the academic world with his radical theory on the evolution of dinosaurs. His once dashing and adventurous personality has disappeared and his American wife, Harriet, becomes increasingly frustrated with their oppressive way of life. Into this stagnating world of unfulfilled dreams enters a butler, Fledge and his wife Doris. On the surface at least they seem ideal, but underneath the fake servility lurks an evil and stealthy ambition.
