Set in London in 1857, The Fool is the story of an obscure little clerk who crossed, from one world to the other by leading a double life - underlying on one in the side as theatre, a knocked made a fool of by everyone, at home amongst the bartering and haggling in the second hand shops where he has been brought up - and on the ether side as a shrewd man of the world, a bold speculator, manipulating the foolishness, gullibility and greed of those around him. The contrast between the two worlds inevitably comes to a contradiction which has to be resolved.
