THE BEAT GENERATION
Producer-director Janet Forman has assembled an absorbing collage of narration, talking heads and vintage 1950s news and home movie footage. For those who know the era and for those just discovering it, the pic is an informative nod back.
All the living principal players are inter- viewed including Allen Ginsberg, Amiri Baraka (then known as Leroi Jones) and William Burroughs. Era legends Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassidy and Thelonious Monk are represented on archival footage. Steve Allen narrates, reminding us he once cut a record accompanying Kerouac reading his work. (Variety, 18.3.1987)
