Separated from the rest of the invading Soviet force in a remote area, a tank is tracked by a small band of Afghan rebels. As they are pursued, one young soldier begins questioning the reasons why he has been sent to fight in a hellish land. The film is also the story of the Afghans who are in pursuit of “The Beast”. These men are the Mujahdeen. They have elevated their resistance into a Holy War against the Soviet “infidels”. They dauntlessly engage the tank in a deadly chase through jagged mountains and barren desert. The story has the simplicity of a classic chase film, enriched by the complexity of human drama. It portrays fighting men who, while under severe stress, manage to find a common humanity amid death and destruction.
