Sweet fruit soon takes on a bitter taste in this powerful indictment of exploitation on Spanish strawberry farms. We follow the arduous journey of a combative Moroccan woman who migrated to Spain hoping for a fresh start. Together with colleagues she starts a protest that takes her from the fields all the way to the courtroom. A moving portrait of sisterhood.
In the vegetable garden of Europe, Hasna (Nisrin Erradi) works for the strawberry farm ‘La más dulce’ (‘the sweetest’). Along with other Moroccan women, she is forced to pick strawberries non-stop in overheated plastic greenhouses. To comply with the imposed orders, the women, constantly urged on and with bent backs, must work themselves to the bone day after day. Knowing full well that they have only each other to fall back on, a sisterhood develops that will prove to be of vital importance. As an acclaimed taekwondo practitioner, Hasna is combative, even though she is also battling ghosts from her own past. Filmmaker Laïla Marrakchi portrays the struggle of women who must function within a dark system that thrives entirely on exploitation. Their resilience and mutual solidarity takes center stage. Marrakchi delivers a film that resonates and after which strawberries will never taste the same again.
