120' - 1974 - Crime, Drama, Biography - Format: 35mm - Dialogue: French, English
This film - with a score by Stephen Sondheim - is Resnais's most approachable film. Jean-Paul Belmondo stars in this romantic story recreating a notorious French scandal from the 1930s. Serge Alexandre, born Sacha Stavisky, a Russian Jew, was a financier and swindler who had powerful allies and connections amongst French politicians and police. Stavisky hided his origins and his past, he lived as if he had no memories. When a major fraud is unmasked, his allies deserted him and Stavisky died in mysterious circumstances. Basing his film on the real-life Stavisky who provoked a scandal which almost toppled the French government in 1934, Resnais has combined fact and fiction into what one critic aptly described as "a tone poem to the 1930s".
