1967. 11-year-old René is trying to cope with the onset of puberty. One night he discovers his mother Reine and father Raymond making love. The next morning, Raymond is dead. René, a
silent witness, becomes a prisoner of his fear of sex. Now a widow without means of support,
Reine is torn between her desire to start a new life and her responsibilities toward her family.
Seductive and beautiful her attractiveness to men renders René jealous and possessive. Eventu
ally, she meets Roch, a man in his thirties, and becomes his lover. Enter Françoise, renting the
upstairs apartment. René becomes deeply attached to her, but feels terribly betrayed when he
discovers her making love to Roch.
