David Hayman's directorial debut is based on the story of Larry Winters. Winters was imprisoned in one of Scotland's toughest jails after killing a barman for no apparent reason. As a ringleader in the bloody riots of the seventies, Larry was administered drugs as a means to keep him down. By 1972 he was an addict. Hayman's film begins as Winters is transferred to Barlinnie prison's 'special unit', which was established to provide a more humane approach to prisoners. This allows him to explore his world through poetry and music, finding a brief release before his untimely death.
