The story of “Querelle de Brest” by Jean Genet served as the basis for Faßbinder’s last film. The action takes place in one huge set created by the Oscar-winning Rolf Zehetbauer. Querelle is the story of a fascinatingly handsome sailor to whom all people become instant slaves. The same is true for his superior, the naval officer Seblon and of the brothel owner Lysiane. But most of all Querelle loves himself - his proximity can be fatal to others. He is a mysterious angel-murderer. Faßbinder himself considered this material to be “perhaps the most radical novel in world literature.”
