France, 1719. Louis XIV died four years ago, Philippe d'Orléans is the regent. Tired of their poverty, the Bretons revolt against Parisian power led by the Marquis of Pontcallec, who decides to visit the Regent, reputed for his liberal tendencies, in order to negotiate the rebels’ demands. D’Orléans’ right-hand man, Dubois, an atheistic and cupid priest, as libertine as Philippe, tries to take advantage of a little rebellion lead by the Breton squire, and of the famine to become archbishop. Pontcallec is arrested on his way to Paris on orders from Abbot Dubois and is deported to Louisiana.
