Clive Langham is a well-known writer in his late seventies. Langham is suffering from terminal cancer and "writer's block". In the course of one long night, in pain and half-drunk, he dreams up a series of scenes for a proposed novel. His characters are based on his own son Claud, Claud's wife Sonia and a man named Devin Woodford, who turns out to be Clive's "favourite bastard". More and more, as the night wears on, the imagined scenes mix themselves up with memories of the real past and shade into dreams and nightmares of political and mythological terror. Then suddenly the night is over and Clive is sitting in the noonday sun awaiting the gathering of his family. Over the next few days he slowly realises he cannot dominate their lives and the characters begin to lead their own lives.
