Project 10 - The Devil Breaks My Heart - 10 Years Later

Director Lederle Bosch Cast Tshepo Mmolo, Donovan Rhode, Bolla Conradie
48' - 2004 - Documentary - Format: 35mm
In 1993, the first instalment of this documentary introduced South Africa to a racially diverse group of children from mainly disadvantaged backgrounds. At the time their prospects might have seemed bleak, but there was optimism in the air. Ten years on, first-time director Lederle Bosch catches up with four of the youngsters. Now fatherless, Tshepo Mmolo lives and survives in the Northern Province, which is enduring one of the worst droughts in history. The new South Africa has provided him with the basics of a house and not much else in relief, but he is optimistic that once he gets his ID he will get a job and become the sole breadwinner. Donovan Rhode and Bolla Conradie grew up in the same violent neighbourhood, with the same opportunities and temptations. Donovan, now a father of two, has chosen a life of petty crime. Although he still visits, Bolla has moved out of the neighbourhood. As he predicted in 1993, he is now a Springbok, playing rugby for his country. Heino Barnard, from a working-class white family, is a typical 16-year-old. He spends all his time drinking and hanging out with his friends.
