On the way to have her legs waxed, TV soap opera star May-Alice suffers an accident that has a devastating impact on her personal and professional life. Paralyzed, she decides to return to her parents' house in a Louisiana bayou and goes through a succession of nurses before Chantelle takes on the job, confronting her own problems at the same time. Both women have wayward old lovers and potential new suitors, and are visited by all-too substantial ghosts from their pasts.
