Arriving home at the end of the term with a disastrous set of school grades, 12-year-old Esma is sent to stay with family friends for a summer of instruction. There she is reunited with Saliha, a young woman she looks up to and adores. Saliha is the black sheep of the family, since deserting her arranged husband to elope with the man she really love. She is disillusioned with love and life. The son of the neighbouring Alevi family, Hüseyin, a good-looking boy of 18, becomes the object of Esma's fascination. Gifts and glances are exchanged as Esma is more and more carried away by fantasies of this love. Yet she is increasingly puzzled by the ways of the heart. This sensitive and touching film is most purely about women - both young and old. It portrays how women perceive life and love, capturing the enduring spirit of the Anatolian matriarchs: angry and passionate, witty and wise.
