This moving and thought-provoking documentary with a script by Jean Cayrol and music by Hanns Eisler, is a meditation on the Nazi death camps. In it, restless tracking shots of the camps as they appear today, filmed in colour, alternate with black-and-white stills or newsreel films showing the obscenities that once took place in these innocent-looking buildings. This film is generally regarded as the finest of Resnais' short films.
