This film marked the first appearance on screen of Bram Stoker' s Dracula. In fact, it was pirated from the 1897 novel and the characters' names were changed. It remains arguably the eeriest and most magical of all the multitude of film versions of the famous supernatural tale. The use of real locations to create atmosphere instead of the usual stylized studio sets, the special effects and the spectra! gaunt figure of Schreck' s Dracula makes the first work of Murnau's maturity also one of his best.
