November 1962. Hélène lives with her stepson Bernard in Boulogne. A compulsive gambler, she makes a living by selling near-antiques out of her blanky white apartment, spending the proceeds and much of her time at the casino with her current lover. As the film begins she is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Alphonse, who had been her lover during the war. He turns up in the company of a young woman whom he introduces as his niece. For his part, Bernard is obsessed with memories of the war in Algeria and of a young Algerian girl (he calls her Muriel) who died under torture. He spends much of his time poring over the tape recordings and 8mm movies he made in Algeria, building his indictment against his friend Robert whom he blames for Muriel's death.
