During World War II, eight Italian soldiers of about 30 years old, are sent to guard a small Greek island in the middle of the Mediterranean. The island is beautiful, but of no strategic importance whatsoever. The ship that brought them is sunk, their radio breaks down and the men are forgotten by their superiors. The island turns out to be inhabited and a small Italo-Greek community farms. The Italians gradually forget that they are soldiers. Thinking they have been abandoned, they start letting themselves go, losing themselves in the lazy rhythms of the hot climate.
