A dark melodrama in the old Yiddish theater tradition, The Man Without a World is set in a typical Jewish town (shtetl) in Eastern Europe , where the Jews' struggle for a dignified life against poverty and racial hatred is complicated by their own division into hostile politica! factions.
The story is told through the unlikely romance of Zevi, a Bohemian Yiddish poet, and Rukheleh, a nice Jewish girl who wants to marry him. Things get complicated by the arrival in town of a a gypsy carnival and its sultry dancer, by Zevi's dreams of a literary career and by the jealousy of the local butcher.
