Against all expectations, a breakdown forces a rising music star (Girl in Red singer-songwriter Marie Ulven in her acting debut) to return home. During a seemingly endless summer she tries to come to terms with herself. Norwegian Eivind Landsvik’s first feature Low Expectations premiered in Cannes and captures dark clouds in the mind against bright Scandinavian light.
When musician Maja suffers a mental breakdown in a hotel room, she returns to her parents’ home. Under her mother’s wing, the rising star tries to recharge her batteries. Maja takes on a part-time job at a local secondary school, where she cautiously navigates a world full of expectations. Low Expectations marks the feature-length debut of director Eivind Landsvik and lead actress Marie Ulven, known as the singer-songwriter Girl in Red. The film was nominated for the Debut Award at Cannes, following Landsvik’s short film Tits (2023), which had previously been in competition there. His sensitive (visual) style, developed through his experience with music videos, is enhanced by the soft 16mm cinematography. Among the cast, you’ll recognise Anders Danielsen Lie from The Worst Person in the World. Finding his own voice amongst his Norwegian compatriots Joachim Trier and Dag Johan Haugerud (Sex, Dreams, Love), Landsvik carves out his own path.
