Simon Roche, an archaeologist, and Elisabeth Sutter, a botanical researcher, have embarked on a passionate romance which is seemingly interrupted by Simon's sudden death, but after being pronounced dead he revives. This almost-dead-experience gives greater intensity to his life and his love for the woman he lives with. Thus the two lovers indulge in the sheer pleasure of their life together, though Simon is obsessed with recapturing his venture beyond the world of the living. When he has another, fatal seizure Elisabeth becomes determined to follow him. The couple's closest friends Judith and Jérome, both protestant ministers, try to dissuade her, but she concludes that "my religion is Simon" and prepares to rejoin him.
