Diégo, a professional revolutionary working to bring revolution to Spain, crosses the Spanish border and travels to Paris. There he meets a young left-wing student Nadine and makes love to her. However, afterwards he returns to the woman he has been sharing his life with for the past nine years Marianne and reports to his comrades on the situation in Spain. Although he is beginning to question the group's effectiveness, he is asked to return to Spain. Nadine discovers the police are likely to be waiting for him and informs Marianne who flies to Barcelona to warn Diégo, but he is already crossing the frontier... The film’s depiction of a man maintaining faith in his ideals, despite the reality around him, makes this one of Resnais' most satisfying films. (Dictionary of films, Georges Sadoul).
