Germany immediately following the burning of the Reichstag: the family of steel industrialist Baron Joachim Von Essenbeck, is divided politically in its support for the Nazis and in a power struggle for control of the firm. Essenbeck's daughter-in-law Sophie persuades her lover and the firm's manager Friedrich Bruckmann to form an alliance with Aschenback, a fanatic Nazi. They denounce Herbert, vice-president and an anti-fascist, help him escape, then shoot the Baron. Friedrich is made heir. The new vice-president blackmails Sophie's son, Martin, to gain control for himself but being a member of the SA, is killed by Friedrich.
