Gugu's world (Feito Pipa)

If it were up to Gugu, he’d save the world single-handedly. The nearly twelve-year-old lad has loads of self-confidence, stands up for himself and is just comfortably himself. Like any Brazilian child, Gugu wants to become a footballer. Although that’s not exactly a given for someone from a small, rural community near a fictional reserve that’s drying up, gradually revealing a sunken city. Even more than football, Gugu loves his grandmother Dilma, with whom he lives. Their tender bond shields him from his father’s disapproval and from bullies. Together in their cosy home, the two seem invincible. But as Dilma, who is suffering from dementia, becomes more vulnerable, Gugu faces the prospect of having to leave the only place where he is understood. With imagery as colourful as its main character, Gugu’s World blossoms into an authentic coming-of-age film.
