This film is much more than an art film. Using Picasso's agonised evocation of the destruction of Guernica by German bombers in the Spanish Civil War, together with other more hopeful paintings and drawings by the same artist and with the aid of a poetic commentary by Paul Eluard, Resnais employed the montage techniques he had gradually been mastering to create a passionate protest against war that is also an exhilarating affirmation of faith in Humanity and the possibility of love.
