Winner of IFFR's Tiger Competition, Fiume o morte! is a hybrid documentary and satire that reinterprets the 1919 occupation of Fiume (now Rijeka in Croatia) by Italian nationalist poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. With a cast of local residents (including seven bald D'Annunzios) and an ironic spirit, Igor Bezinović transforms this historical episode into an absurd performance.

Fiume o morte! by Croatian director Igor Bezinović is a hybrid satire/documentary that reinterprets the 1919 occupation of Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) by poet, aristocrat, and army officer Gabriele D'Annunzio. With a cast of local residents, seven bald D'Annunzios, and a hefty dose of irony, Bezinović recreates this historical episode as an absurd performance in which he delves into national identity, collective memory, the rise of fascism, and the fine line between heroism and madness. While D'Annunzio is still celebrated in Italy as a national hero, in Croatia he is remembered as a megalomaniacal occupier. Bezinović lets Rijeka speak for itself: a city that doesn't rewrite its past but reenacts it. Fiume o morte!, winner of the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, is a as playful as it is critical, as provocative as it is entertaining. A must-see for anyone who loves cinema that dares to reflect on how we experience history.
