Don Gallagher is a happily married New York attorney. But when his wife Beth and daughter Ellen are out of town for a weekend, he becomes passionately involved with Alex Forrest, an unmarried publishing executive. For Dan, this is a whirlwind affair, intense but short lived. Alex, however, wants more. After Dan has repeatedly tried to brush her off, she cuts her wrists and later tells him she's pregnant.
