England, early 19th century. This funny and timeless tale, based on Jane Austens novel of the same title, tells the story of Emma Woodhouse. Emma, handsome, clever and rich, has just
married off her former governess to the long-widowed Mr. Weston. She befriends Harriet
Smith, an orphan of dubious birth, whom she determines to pair off with the eligible vicar Mr.
Elton. Harriet has already formed an attachment to Robert Martin, an honest farmer, but
Emma convinces her that she can do better. When Robert proposes to Harriet, Emma bullies
her into refusing him. Emma informs Mr. Knightley, an old family friend, of her romantic
machinations. To her astonishment, Knightley angrily upbraids her for filling Harriet with ideas
above her station.
