Eagles of the Republic zeroes in on how an authoritarian regime sinks its claws into popular art. What begins as biting satire soon darkens as movie star George Fahmy is forced into portraying President Al-Sisi in a state-sponsored biopic. A dangerous entanglement drives the so-called “Pharaoh of the Silver Screen” into an ever-tighter corner. With his longtime collaborator Fares Fares in the lead, Saleh once again proves himself a master storyteller and sharp critical voice—one no longer welcome in Egypt. This Swedish Oscar submission had its world premiere in competition at Cannes.
