Michel Franco’s Dreams unfolds as an unsettling portrait of love entangled with power. A Mexican ballet dancer, Fernando, enters the orbit of Jennifer (Jessica Chastain), a wealthy philanthropist. What begins with attraction spirals into a tense exploration of class divisions, racial prejudice, and the fragile illusions that hold relationships together.
In Dreams, Mexican director Michel Franco (Chronic, Memory) exposes both the dream and nightmare of migration in a story that is at once intimate and political. It opens with a harrowing scene: a truck full of migrants, their cries silenced abruptly - an image that immediately sets the tone for a film about borders, inequality, and power. At its center is Fernando, a Mexican ballet dancer who enters the world of Jennifer (Jessica Chastain), an American philanthropist. What begins as fiery attraction soon escalates into an explosive relationship, steeped in class divisions, racism, and abuse of power. Jennifer's luxury and her image as a benefactor are mercilessly stripped bare by Franco: her love proves to be a form of control, her empathy a façade. Dreams is an unmistakable political allegory, in which the love story signifies the unequal relationship between Mexico and the United States.
