Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam (The Golem)

91' - 1920 - Fantasy, Horror - Dialogue: German
Director: Paul Wegener, Carl Boese Composer: Hans Landsberger, Lukasz Poleszak With: Paul Wegener, Albert Steinrück, Ernst Deutsch, Paul Wegener, Lyda Salmonova
In 16th-century Prague, a rabbi (Steinruck) creates a monster (Wegener) out of clay to help his people fight against the Emperor's expulsion of the Jews from the ghetto. This film is the most eye-catching of the various versions of this ancient Jewish legend, mainly because of the expressionistic sets by Hans Poelzig and the use of chiaroscuro to create a gothic effect. Wegener's lumbering gait was imitated by Boris Karloff in Frankenstein (1931).
