Following on from his critically acclaimed and award-winning debut Abel, Alex van Warmerdam returns after a six year break with this film, a funny - and almost silent - portrait of provincial life in 1960.
The film focuses on Thomas, a 12-year old boy obsessed with the recently resolved civil war in the Congo. Through the young boy's eyes, the audience is introduced to the petty bourgeois villagers living by a polite moral code but brimming with frustrated emotions and pent-up obsessions.
