Thirteen-year old Amiro lives alone by the shore on a beached freighter. In between jobs collecting empty bottles dumped by transient shipping, selling leed water and shoe-shining, Amiro dreams of leaving. Though illiterate, he nevertheless spends what little money he earns buying magazines, mostly about aeroplanes so he can gaze in wonder at different craft which, in different circumstances, could spell his way out.
