The film is based on the novel by Martha Christensen. In the film as in the novel, the past and the present are constantly being juggled. In the present, Regitze and her husband, Karl Äge, are busy making the last preparations for a summer party. Old friends are coming, the sky is clear blue with not a cloud in sight, glasses are filled to the brim, the mood is festive. But Karl Äge is lost in thought. He reminisces about the day he first met Regitze, at a time when they were both young and went out dancing while trying to forget that the Germans were occupying Denmark. Recollections come and go, of sorrows and joys, of friends and family, and all the time he is thinking of Regitze, the center of his universe.
